Margin
高一(3)班 张晨曦
Human beings are born designers. With a delicately-structured brain and considerable wisdom in it, we tend to make worlds not only practical but beautiful as well. Books, for instance, contain such wisdom of humans that does not only exists between the lines. The piece of blank that lies beside the lines plays an equally important role. Margins, wordless yet contributive, make reading a much more pleasant experience.
I am one of those students that takes notes while having class. On the one hand, my being forgetful makes it necessary to take notes continually and on the other, something is need to keep my mind occupied in case it refuses to follow the endless stories of Chinese teachers and enjoys itself drifting in the thin air. As it turns out, writing something down, meaningful or worthless, is proved effective and the margins become the rightful habitation of my beautiful calligraphy. The comfortable margin-writing not only saves me the effort of opening my desk and seeking out the very single notebook that has the identical appearance as any others, but helps remind me of the important points when it comes to revision. With an enjoyable view of my handwriting, I could simply finger through the textbook, gently viewing the texts with related notes while others have to be busy with their various notebooks and find it hard to relate the points to texts.
With or without any note, the margins bring considerable beauty to the black and white sheets. I cannot think of any papers, documents or books filling with nothing but lines, except for a little piece of correction paper where I rectified the mistakes of math problems and had to rip off the margins because of the size. I regretted doing so at the very sight of the marginless paper and couldn’t help thinking how on earth a man would read books without the beautiful and indispensible string of blank that promptly gives human eyes a soothing break after a line’s reading. The overwhelming comprehension is appropriately constrained by the mere 1~2 centimeters’ wide absence which would taste like a refreshing sip of wine that helps process a stomach of oily stuffing before someone throws up. Even as a whole, the margins around the pages decorate the words and characters with pure elegance, as well as ensures that a naughty boy wouldn’t blacken the content with two dirty hands. Without all its adornment and protection, a marginless page is like a crustless bread, a packageless present, a wallless room and a figureless soul, ugly and not knowing where to start or where to end.
By all measures, it is unquestionable that margin was a most remarkable invention and yet it was thousands of years before Eddie’s light bulb. Much as we may pride ourselves on being appreciative, we rarely discover the trivial and obscurity that contents the plain world with aesthetics. Perhaps we have always taken for granted for, after all, to accept margins is to admit that sometimes, beauty isn’t a long way that stretches to nowhere. It runs all the way down here, right around us.
I see the earth

Dear diary,
You know, we, Martians, have always been searching for relatives in the universe, and today we got a BIG surprise. Do you remember the message that I mentioned last year. We finally worked out with its contents——
“Hello, my friend far far away. This is your friend greeting you from a far far away planet, which is quite a beautiful blue star in the solar system called the earth. We are sending photos of our home with the message, earring to seek for a response…”
We’ve already located “the earth” and found it close to us. The Department of Space intends to send a crew to visit it as soon as possible. Dear me, I can’t wait to see the earth!
Jan.1st 2502
Two years of hard work finally turned it possible to travel to the earth. Tomorrow will be the BIG DAY. Very honored, I am among the crew. Thinking about seeing the earth is just like daydreaming. I still can’t believe it. Anyhow, it had already thrown me into over excitement. The photo can be easily reflected in my mind at any second——under a pure blue sky which was like a bottle of blue ink that knocked over, cars moved neatly on the road which had mansions on both sides. On roadsides stood trees that slightly bending their branches. A girl in a white dress was shaking her hands. Her bright smile seemed to be an act of warm welcome to us of going to the beautiful and lively land. How beautiful and how amazing! But we will have to spend 2 days getting to our destination. How I wish to squeeze the 48-hour-ride into 1 second!

TOTALLY SHOCKED
…
TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED
?
TOTALLY CONFUSED
Poles apart from my anticipate, on the earth which I had been dreaming to see there was only gray and gloomy sky instead of fresh blue one. There was no trace of life instead of vibrant full of vigor. I was wondering if we had just arrived in a wrong destination, but the truth was——it had been proved to be right from the conductor on Mars. God! What on earth is wrong? (This question seems to be perfectly suitable here.)

Something that happened made me feel like listening to science fiction. Armed with our advanced new machine, we examined a large area of soil thoroughly, and finally found remains of a man-like creature! How excited and anxious I was! Thanks to our specially made poison that we succeeded in making him alive again. It was a long time before he could recall the past——
The earth used to be lively and lovely, with green trees everywhere and brightly colored neon lights lighting up modern cities. It was 2015 and everyone enjoyed life in a high technology epoch. (that’s the earth I saw on the photo). They all ate change-gene food at that time. That was also a product of high-tech society. They were more tasty and could have advantages that people needed. The “intelligent” people were proud of their technology and had never thought of the potential danger it had. One day, however, there was a strange disease breaking up. People who had the disease got livers intoxicated and damaged. They couldn’t live longer than a week. Scientists hadn’t manage to develop a specific remedy by the time all humans were struck down by the deadly disease.
A drop of water spilled over his eye and he fell down onto the ground with the most sorrowful expression I have ever seen, left me alone wondering what change-gene food is. I was confused. I don’t know what it is. Is it DRUG?
——That’s part of a Martian’s dairy of seeing the earth. From it, I see our future earth in a tragic way too. But it seems to be extremely possible if we don’t think about the potential danger of change-gene food, and other problems that might appear in the fast-growing world. Slow down, friends! Don’t bury the earth while doing what we think might be called “brilliant achievements”!
I see my way
高一(3)班 何应琛
Refused by the 10th publishing house, Wayfarer hid his cell and stared at the ceiling. His sight was filled with the faces of different editors he had seen: a middle-aged fatty women, a man with mustache…… they were making a strange picture, criticizing at Wayfarer’s poems for unbelievable reasons——that was what the young poet thought about.
“These stupid editors have obstructed all my ways……” he muttered, not realizing it was snowing heavily outside.
It wasn’t a special day in winter, so no one paid attention to a skinny young man coming out of his apartment. With great disappointment, he felt like his only way out was done. The road was completely covered with purely white snow, which reminded the poor melancholic man of his poems. He stepped into the snow, yet couldn’t help thinking about his own works.
He started writing poems at the age of 15, and since then, he had never stopped. He wanted to find his way. It was a long march and a discovery, with tear and joy. However, now his way was obstructed, was covered by snow, was not able to be seen. Standing alone on the sidewalk and staggering on the way, he was soon capped with snow.
“Look! A yeti! Beat it!”
Shouting in the form of naïve voices came into Wayfarer’s ears, but he was too late to evade. Shoop! A snowball at a speed of
Yahooooo!” children cheering and hopping came into sight. Just at that moment, his anger was gone. Moreover, he got a feeling——he found what the real poem was. Happiness, childhood, exploring……those were going to be extolled by his words. They should never be judged by the taste of the editors or the press. A way was shown, with tear and joy, under the children’s footsteps, winding in the snow, reaching the door of his heart.
“Nice shot!” Wayfarer exclaimed, he ran to the children. He was galloping on his own way and singing out poem of himself:
“I see my way……”
