5月24日上午，我校在行政楼北广场举行了2021年外文节开幕式暨升旗仪式。开幕式由高一3班张若冰和高二6班徐凡舒涵主持。大预班的葛靖担任了主旨演讲的中文翻译。

高中外文组莫勤勤老师作了主旨演讲。莫老师围绕本届外文节主题“解锁未来”分享了她的看法。她指出，未来虽然是不可预测的，但却来自于转瞬即逝的过去和当下的行为和想法，所以为未来做好准备的最有用的途径就是做好当下。作为外国语学校的学生，掌握一门或几门外语，利用外语的力量不仅能让同学们突破语言的障碍，带着胸怀世界的眼光开启人生旅程，还能对自己的国家和世界产生更深刻的认识和浓厚的情感。在日新月异的新时代，为全球的共同理解和共同发展贡献一份力量。

随后，高三大预班的应林琪、俞欣怡、陈开、梁盼颖、陈君洋5名同学，激越昂扬地用英、法、西、德、日5种语言演唱了歌曲 “Do you hear the people sing”，表达了他们对未来的展望。

2021杭外外文节将持续一周时间，除传统的戏剧之夜、演讲比赛等大型活动外，各个年级也组织了丰富多彩的主题活动，旨在增进对多元文化的了解，激发语言学习兴趣，展示外语能力，浓厚语言学习氛围。预祝2021杭外外文节圆满成功！

Dear teachers and students:

Good morning!

We are so delighted to be together in this lovely season to welcome the arrival of 2021 Foreign languages Festival. I’m honored to have the opportunity to share with you my thoughts on this year’s theme: unlock the future.

But what exactly is the future? In the book “the Alchemist”, a conversation between the oldest Seer and a camel driver may give us the answer. When the camel driver asked the Seer about his future, the Seer said, “When people consult me, it’s not that I am reading the future; but I am guessing at the future.” He added, “ How do I guess at the future ? It’s based on the omens of the present. The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better.”

Maybe you still think what you are doing every day doesn’t matter and future is unpredictable and often unknowable. Then let’s take an example of learning a foreign language. What should you expect from the future with the power of your foreign languages ?

Imagine what happens when you read a novel. Engrossed in the narrative, you are invited to  the fictional world from a character’s perspective, where you will think about the interplay between this person’s desires and actions. So when you have chosen a foreign language, it’s as if you were standing on the land in which the language is spoken. The language will take you to experience the culture and the history of that country and you’ll have an emotional response that will connect you with the people there and their new perspectives. And therefore you’ve started your life journey with the eyes of the world. Such a world view will lead you to reflect on your own culture, and through your culture to reflect on the culture of the world. Consciousness and feelings of home and the world will grow naturally in your mind.

To harness the power of foreign languages, you will ensure you are widely accessible, from poetry, fiction to drama, from reviews to scientific reports. All these will give you chances to share the joy and wonder of foreign languages with others, understand complexity and empathize. Works in different languages will create an experimental site of more dialogues, more discussions, more debates full of interpretations and critical insights.

Around the world, we are seeing modern technology has connected people beyond the border, but too often we remain isolated in our own narrow circles. In a new era of cooperation with the rest of the world, foreign languages empower us with knowledge, skills, and commitment required by world citizens. To join foreign languages with new digital tools can help us reach across divides-- through time and space, allowing us to solve global problems together, explore our rich culture resources, provide the possibility of real understanding. When facing a real world in the near future, you will encounter different people and various things, sense all human emotions and these experiences will then be able to help us，Chinese people,  tell more good Chinese stories on the international stage.

A Polish laureate poet Wislawa Szymborska thinks ‘future’ is an odd word. In her poem, she wrote “When I pronounce the word Future, the first syllable already belongs to the past.”So whatever we imagine is good in the future stems from the ideas and actions of the past. Nevertheless, the most practical solution to unlock the future is to live in the present. It’s now or never.

Wish 2021 Foreign Languages Festival to be a wonderful part in our memory and another step to the future!

大家早上好！

在这个美好的季节，我们共同喜迎2021外文节的到来。我很荣幸有机会与大家分享我对今年外文节主题 “开启未来”的一些思考。

未来究竟是什么呢？在《炼金术士》一书中，先知和骆驼夫之间的一段对话也许能为我们提供答案。当骆驼夫向先知占卜他的未来时，先知说到：“当人们找我占卜他们的未来时，我并不是知道他们的未来，而是猜的。那我如何猜测未来呢？我是通过现在的预兆。秘密就在当下。如果你重视当下，你就能改进它。而如果你改进它，相继而来的事情也会变得更好。”

也许你仍然认为你每日所做之事无关紧要，未来是无法预测，而且往往是无法知晓的。那么就让我们以学习一门外语为例, 看看它究竟能给你的未来带来什么力量？

想象一下你正在读一本小说。沉浸于故事之中，你用其中一个人物的角度来想象这个世界。在故事中你会思考他的情感欲望与行动如何相互作用。所以，当你选择学习一门外语的时候，你就仿佛站在了使用这门语言的地方。你学习的语言会带着你开始体验那个国家的文化和历史，产生情感上的回应。这种回应会把你和那里的人以及他们的视角联系起来。由此你带着胸怀世界的眼光开启了你的人生旅程。这样的世界观将引导你反思你自己的文化，并通过自身的文化反思世界的文化。对家和世界的深刻认识和浓厚情感由此不知不觉地扎根在心中。

为了更好地发挥外语的力量，你就会要确保从各方面广泛汲取，从诗歌、小说到戏剧，从评论到科学报告。这些都将给予你与他人分享外语带来的美好与神奇；帮助我们理解错综复杂的形势并与他人产生共鸣。不同语言的作品会成为一个个火花碰撞的地方，在这里有着更多对话，更多讨论，更多辩论，充满着多样解读和批判见解。

放眼世界，虽然我们看到现代科技连接了全球各地的人，然而我们却常常囿于自己的小圈子里。在这个世界合作的新时代，外语赋予我们世界公民所需要的知识、技能和献身的决心。把外语与新型数字化工具结合能跨越时空的鸿沟，帮助我们共同解决全球问题，探索我们丰富的文化资源，实现真正理解的可能性。在不久的将来面对现实世界时，你会遇见形形色色的人和千千万万的事，感受到纷纷繁繁的人类情感，而这些经历将有助于我们中国人在国际舞台上讲出更多好故事。

波兰桂冠诗人维斯瓦娃·辛波丝卡认为“未来”是一个奇怪的词汇。她在诗中写道：“当我说出未来一词，第一个音节发出便已成为过去。”所以我们展望的未来有多美好都是基于过去那些转瞬即逝的行动和想法。而开启未来最切实可行的方法莫过于活在当下，把握现在。

衷心祝愿2021外文节能成为诸位记忆中的精彩的一幕，让2021外文节带我们走向未来！
