Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, graduates, students. It is a great honour to be here once again for the graduation of another fine group of students from HFLS Cambridge A-Level Centre.
Every graduation ceremony is, of course, very special, but for me, this year's graduation is just a little bit extra special. Back in September 2016 I had just started as Centre Principal at the CAL Centre. Hangzhou Foreign Languages School has, of course, an excellent reputation, not just amongst the Chinese but also within the wider expat community who are familiar with education in China. So I would be lying if I pretended I was not a little overawed by the great responsibility which was now resting on my shoulders. And just as I was beginning a new phase of my life, so were 120 fresh face, ambitious teenagers. During my first few weeks in the school I was deeply impressed by what I saw of the students – by their level of English, and by their general attitude and behaviour. When I think back to 2016 I can clearly remember observing IGCSE lessons with Ms Yvette, Mr Rick and Mr Richard Zhu. And in those English lessons in particular I was knocked out by how well the new Year 1 students were able to work together in groups, discussing their topics in English, and then stand fearlessly in front of the class (and the CP) to recount their ideas and discussions
My memories of 2016 also include my first HFLS Spring Outing, when we all, including my dog, climbed for hours and hours in baking heat through the beautiful hills and mountains which look down on our school. I still don't think my knees, or my dog, have quite recovered from those exertions; but my memories of that very special day will stay with me forever. But it feels strange for me now to think that those delightful youngsters who I got to know just a little better on that day are today on the brink of leaving China and heading overseas into the big wide world, for an altogether more daunting adventure. It's actually a little surprising to me that, up until this year, I have not had all that much to do with the students from the class of 2019 in formal classroom settings. But I feel I know you well, from seeing around the school, from your many contributions to morning assemblies and school celebrations, and from the simple day-to-day interactions that make up school life. Your happy, smiling faces have been a constant feature of the three delightful years I have spent here in Hangzhou, and it will be more than a little strange when I return here in September, but you do not.
But that is, of course, the nature of school life, where change is the only constant. We teachers often talk about the mysterious dynamic which makes a particular collection of individuals behave in one way or another. And just as it applies in a classroom, so it also applies to a larger group, such as 'the class of 2019'. I think it is safe to say that it was obvious from early on that you would were a fine group of students who it would be a delight to work with. But what has been especially pleasing for me is seeing how you have grown and developed over the past three years. Within your ranks there are more than a few exceptionally gifted youngsters. But more importantly, I think, you have developed quite outstanding academic maturity and humility. You recognise that raw talent is not enough on its own, that the greatest successes come from hard work and application; from learning from each other, and from your mistakes; and from identifying your weaknesses and working to address them. As you move on from our high school into diverse and dispersed locations and challenges, it will become clearer that, in the end, this is what education is about. It's not about being the best in your class, or better than somebody else, it's about being the best that you can be. Building on your own strengths and overcoming your own shortcomings, whether that maybe shyness, or poor time management or just a general lack of organisation. Because when you know yourself better you will appreciate the great things that you can achieve, and what you must do to achieve them.
Class of 2019, it has been a privilege to know you over the last three years, and an absolute delight to have taught so many of you this year. Intelligent、courteous 、perceptive、 inquisitive、 fun……the list goes on. I have often heard your teachers this year praising your maturity and level headedness; the hard work that you have put in and the well-deserved progress you have made. You are ready, I think, for the greater challenges which lie ahead. And I am very grateful to you all, for the many contributions, large and small, you have made to our school – the performances and projects, the awards and accolades. As you move on to the next stage of your great adventure, I hope that your memories of Hang-wai will help you meet the challenges ahead. The lessons that you have learned here, from your teachers and from each other, will help you achieve your academic goals. And I hope the friendships forged, with teachers and students, will help you navigate strange new personal and social expectations you will encounter. You thoroughly deserve all the successes you have achieved so far, and I am sure that many more lay ahead for each and every one of you.
Dear students and parents, I was delighted to be asked to deliver the speech to the graduating class of 2019. They are a group of students I have known throughout their 3 years with us and a group that have worked hard for the successes they have achieved. That hard work and positive attitude will allow them future success in whatever challenges they face.
This year I decided that the theme of my speech would be transition. That has been and will be the common thread of your lives in a modern world where change is the only constant. When you arrived here fresh from your middle school you faced many challenges. Lessons in English, only, a new environment, strangers who might become friends, being away from your family and experiencing a new culture of learning and dealing with problems. It is a very daunting prospect for people so young. But look at how well you have done. You can congratulate yourselves for the success you have achieved.
Teaching is a hard job but one which can be made much easier by the students. I worked for many years in Scotland, my home country. I enjoyed the experience. But when I came to China 15 years ago I had a renewal of enthusiasm. When I came to CAL center I really began to enjoy teaching. You made a difference to me.
Transitioning from the Scottish system to the International system was hard but rewarding. I felt that the efforts that I put in to change made my life better. With every challenge we will experience setbacks and rewards. You are going into the world, to Colleges somewhere outside China. That is a challenge.
But your teachers and counsellors have worked hard with you to prepare you for success in any new environment that you experience. That is the value of coming to Hangzhou foreign Language School CAL center. You are as well prepared as we can make you. You are ready for anything that the world can throw at you. Remember that. A problem is an opportunity.
You are a remarkable group of people. You have worked hard in the 3 years that you have been with us. You have changed yourselves from children into self-confident young adults. You have shown your teachers and parents that you can become anything you want. The future is yours to make. Go out and make it a good future.
Faculty, family members, well-wisher and fellow graduands; good afternoon. I am truly honored to have been given this opportunity to speak on behalf of the class of 2019, on this august occasion in June. Congratulations, we have made it to a most point in our lives. We are here today to start the future. It's not a distant reality anymore. It begins here. It begins today.
I thank our school; it gave us the opportunity to exhibit our unique qualities, talents and abilities. I thank our teachers; they guided us on the path to finding our own interests. I thank our parents; they are the ones who paved the way for us to go and embrace the world in unconventional ways.
Many would think that we took the easy path, by not sitting the “Gaokao.” However, we who have been through it can attest, it was by no means easy. We met myriad obstacles over the three years; but with the help of our teachers and parents, we got through them, and today, we can stand proudly in celebration of our achievements. Today is a day we will always remember.
I still remember the day I came to this new school, feeling unfamiliar and unacquainted; measuring my time here by days, weeks, and semesters. However, as times passed, the unique style of teaching led me to think differently, to think in my own way. We have experienced so many things together: the exhausting spring trips, the exciting sport meetings, the annoying SAT tests that are always lingering around, and the unforgettable tenth anniversary celebration we held. Over the past three years, we were busy; reflecting on ourselves and enriching ourselves. We were relaxed; taking leisure strolls on campus; capturing its beauty. This school is now engraved in our hearts and will remain there forever.
Now here we stand, about to graduate. Looking back, I will no longer measure the time by weeks or semesters, but in the friendships I enjoyed. We have made so many memories together, good and, well, not so good, but most of which we can now look back on and laugh! We worked hard together and finally got to where we are today. The mutual help and encouragements from friends were indispensable on our journey.
When, in the future, we get caught up in the busyness of life and many of our high school memories begin to fade, we will find the friendships we fostered engraved in our hearts. It is what we will always hold to and cherish for a lifetime.
This graduation is not an end; college-life is a brand-new start. High school was fun, but we have turned a new page; onward to go, to play our part on a different stage. Soon we’ll experience the “future life” we once dreamed of; we ‘ll go to different schools, different countries, for each of us must travel our separate paths. We may not know what we want to be when we grow up, some more, and that’s okay. Now is the time to find our passion, it is time to discover what we want to be. So, don't aim for perfection, as a matter of fact, it is better to be flawed. Since the challenges we’ll meet along the way, is the best gift of all. In overcoming these, we will become, a marked improved version of ourselves.
Today’s learning is not just for a certificate, but for self-improvement; it is not just for immediate utility, but for life-long growth and development. It is the start of a journey. A journey that impresses on us to be responsible for every decision we make. Well, we may not have the power to inspire the world, but we have the power to try to achieve the best for ourselves; and maybe, just maybe, in doing so we can inspire another, who may in turn, inspire the world. The future is truly in our hands, let’s grasp and make the most of it.
On behalf of my fellow graduands and I, thank you for a most tremendous experience and opportunity at HFLS.
