Ladies and gentlemen, Dear teachers and students:
Good morning!
Like the Alumni-Cup for Junior 3 and the Zhou Enlai Cup for senior 3, this opening speech is a great grand honor for all the teachers in our school.
This festival is the 15th Foreign Languages Festival in my memory and this year is the 55th anniversary of our school which was founded in a call for more young diplomats by one of our founding fathers--Premier Zhou Enlai, in whose symbolic shadow we are celebrating our festival today and in whose legacy we are renewing the meaning of his principle ---'Share Similarities, Embrace Differences.'
Today this fundamental principle of his is still of vital importance because whether we would like the world to be chaos or an oasis largely depends on how much we share our similarities and to what extent we embrace our differences.
One month ago, series explosions in Sri Lanka caused large casualties with over 350 deaths and 500 injuries.
Two months ago, severe massacre in New Zealand killed 50 worshipers and wounded dozens.
These bloody explosions which shattered people’s hearts and put the whole world in great panic were partly caused by lack of respect and understanding between countries and cultures, and these bloody massacres have also manifested that we still have a long journey to go and a tough job to do before we can live in peace and enjoy harmony in diversity.
Then what is the role that education can play in reaching this understanding between cultures? And how can education help in cultivating this trust between countries so that we can discuss but not dispute, we can share but not shoot, we can embrace but not have to endure.
The answer is positive. Education is not simply a process of teaching and training and learning. Education involves people. Education consists of a series of enchantments and these enchantments promote the individual to a higher level of awareness, communication, understanding, trust, intellectual intimacy with the world and family kinship with people around him, which enlightens the minds, inspires the hearts and enhances civilization. This awareness, understanding and trust brought by education are the glue of the world. They are the emotional oxygen that melts the cultural conflicts and the fundamental frame that maintains good relationships.
So in spite of these disputes, we saw the beauty of friendship between Tony Lip and Donald Shirley in the recent Oscar movie --- Green Book, which
dawns on the belief in humanity and builds up the confidence in the world.
So in spite of these conflicts, we witnessed the glory of respect for human civilization when the spire of Notre Dame was engulfed in flames, which shocked the whole world but brought the hearts together.
Lord Paul Boateng, Chairman of the English-Speaking Union, said, “Beyond the nations and traditions, across the seas and oceans, there are things that bond us together.”
Then what is the bond? The similarities that we share are the bond. The same destiny that we face is the bond. The symphony that the children of One Voice,Caucasians and Africans, Hispanics and Asians sing is the bond.
Nevertheless, it is not enough to share this bond and these similarities. What really counts is that we recognize our differences and we still embrace these differences.
Stephen Covey, the famous American educator once said. “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” It is the difference that defines an individual, a nation, a culture. It is the difference that contributes diversity to the global community. And according to Yao Yao, one of our students in senior 1, ‘Diversity means possibility’ because diversity inspires, enriches and uplifts the global community.
Two months ago, I went to the Grand Final of China Daily’s First Belt & Road Youth International English Speaking Competition and I saw this possibility. 31 contestants from 30 different countries and regions shared their similar experiences and exchanged their different ideas about their cultures. 6 grand finalists from China, India, Malaysia, Korea, Papua New Guinea and Mauritius stood on the stage of G20 and talked about the efforts the Belt & Road countries should make, the mission they should fulfill, the responsibility they should take and the commitment they should perform for the shared future of mankind. They well interpreted our theme today.
So the Great Truth is Simple: Share Similarities, Embrace Differences and Bring the whole world together to be one. It is not easy, but No Cross No Crown.
Wish HFLS to keep the crown on and wish the 2019 Foreign Languages Festival to generate another epic.
Thank you.

O peak of peaks, how high it stands! One boundless green o’er spreads two States. A marvel done by Nature’s hands, o’er light and shade it dominates. Clouds rise there from and lave my breast; my eyes are strained to see birds fleet. Try to ascend the mountain’s crest: It dwarfs all peaks under our feet.
Part C:
I have come to know the skies splitting with lightnings, and the waterspouts
And the breakers and currents; I know the evening,
And Dawn rising up like a flock of doves,
And sometimes I have seen what men have imagined they saw!
大预:We are also reading foreign poems, giving them new lives with our mother tongue.

The kiss rising slowly to the eyes of the seas,
The circulation of undreamed-of saps,
And the yellow-blue awakenings of singing phosphorus!
