Honorable judges and my dear fellows:
good afternoon.
Six years ago when my mom looked me in the eye and said “Girl, you need to learn to take care of yourself when you are not home.” That little nervous me realized for the first time that leaving home for the new world was, and would always be the witness of growth. Six years later, on this afternoon of leaving high school, I’m again standing on that point of “home” and “world”.
Some of you down there may want to question: Why do you call HFLS a home now? Me in 2012 would probably have the same idea. I was dragged out of my comfort zone at that time and sent onto this brand new piece of land with fierce competition, unknown challenges and without mom’s special recipe or a single bedroom for myself. I will definitely be defeated by those talents!-I bet you guys have had the exactly same feelings as mine when you stepped into the gate of this school. But today, I’m here delivering this speech in this familiar room, in front of all the familiar faces. The place is my cozy nest now. Successfully I am not defeated; actually no one is defeated here. We’ve all made some progress, no matter big or small, when we are exploring this place as a world. Here I’ve learnt to speak a foreign language, to make choices on my own, and to take care of myself as my mom said. And from the day on, I will step onto a road towards a new world that I have no idea what it’s going to be like.
Life sounds like a circle, huh? You explore a new world, get involved in it, make it your home, and leave it for another world. It is a circle, but I would say “a circle that’s getting bigger”. For a little kid, home is the only place where mom is. But your “home” can be way more than that. There is one home you’re born with, but there are a lot homes that you can discover on your own in the world ahead. Home can be here in Hangzhou, but can be in faraway Iceland as well. Home can be in language learning, but can be in Finance, in Engineering, in Computer Science as well. There are countless possibilities for “home” - Last home is behind, next home is waiting for you ahead.
Liu Yu said: “A place that is related to your dream or your ideal self can be called home.” Nick Jonas said:” Home is where you’re happy. Home is where you’re right where you should be.” HFLS is home because here I’ve become my ideal self as a teenager. Hangzhou is home because I have been enjoying every day here in this city. But throughout our lives, dreams and ideals are changing. Where will be the homes for my adulthood? Which will be the city for the rest of my life? I don’t know. That’s why I go on to search for them.
Home is where you feel comfortable and safe while world is where unknown opportunities and challenges coexist. Every time we leave our homes behind, we are saying goodbye to what we are used to and are satisfied with. That world ahead is full of what we are unfamiliar with and are not capable of. As we grow older, we will go on to find our homes one after another as we strive for what we believe is right for us. We will also set out for new world ahead because we eager for something better. That’s how the circle is getting bigger. And it is right because our life is such a circle that we grow to be a person with potentials. Life is all about ever searching, about lighting up your homes all over this marvelous world.
So ladies and gentlemen, please don’t be afraid that you will become homeless if you leave. The world itself is in fact a home that is infinitely big. Here I am today, again on that point of “home” and “world”. Instead of feeling nervous and afraid, my heart is now filled half with nostalgia and half with excitement, nostalgic for I will be apart with all of you, but excited for soon I will be embracing a new world and a different self. The best is yet to come in the world ahead- for me and for all of you.
Thank you. And happy graduation beforehand!
Home behind, world ahead.

Just an hour ago, when I took a final glimpse at my dorm, a mixed feeling overwhelmed me. I suddenly knew that this day, May 25th, will mark the end of my high school years, and the beginning of the next phase.
Part of the feeling was excitement. Finally, I get rid of all the monotonous and repetitive homework; A long summer vacation allows me to do the things I like. But part of the feeling is confusion. I will have to leave HFLS, where I have spent the past six years, just in a few minutes. Then, I will embark on a entirely new journey in a different school, a different city.
Just like me, my fellow classmates are going to——and all of you who are sitting here, will leave our home and set out for the unknown world sooner or later. And this is very different from the time when we left middle school and went into high school——This time, we arefaced with an expansive world, we truly become a part of the society, we have more energy and resources to fight for our dreams, and make our contributions to the world.
So what should we do to embrace the world, as the next generation of China? How should we position ourselves in a ever-developing country, and a highly-globalized world? These are the questions that need to be answered by us.
But firstly, let me assure you that everyone of us has something good at. You may not be getting a satisfactory grade, but you may have a flair for singing or dancing; you may not be good at playing sports, but you may excel in computer programming or solving math problems. The thing is, have we became aware of the importance of finding out our talents and give full play to it.
So here is the first thing we should do to better embrace the world: keep on studying. Be a learner. Studying is important because it is the way to acquire knowledge and skills for us to gain a foothold in this world. An engineer will not come up with an advanced production process until he has read hundreds of professional essays; A musician will not be able to bring out a masterpiece unless he has listened to thousands of musical works; An orator like me will not deliver a remarkable speech unless he has studied hundreds and thousands of other famous speeches. We will be able to confront the toughest difficulties and solve the hardest problems through persistent learning.
Second, remain optimistic and perseverant, be brave to challenge the impossible. Be a dreamer. No one is born to be successful. Those people who enjoy fame and high status always worker harder and endure more. Jack Ma suffered many failures before he founded Alibaba; J.K Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published; Students who performed on the Drama Night last night must have spent weeks to practice. These people succeeded because they didn’t let their failure define them; they let their failure teach them how to do better next time. It is the same thing that we should do on our exploration to the outside world.
Whether we will continue our study in China or aboard, the new world in front of us is so different. New code of ethics and moral values will immediately impact on us once we set foot in the unknown land. Should we be conservative or introverted? No. Try to think and try to understand. Try to make more friends. Try to be a inclusive person. Be a listener. The more we know about the world around us, the better we can fit in.
However, heading to the world ahead does not mean that we can discard our home behind. Our home is the source of knowledge and wisdom, the origin of our strength and innovation, the harbor that we long for when we are away. Our home cultivates our soul, and makes us who we are. It gives us the qualities we need to better understand the world.
Today, we live in a highly developed world. We have a high living standard. We have easy access to knowledge and entertainment. However, underneath the peacefulness, we are also confronted with fiercer conflicts and harder challenges, and as a member of the international family, we, the next generation of China, should be responsible for our country and the world. Therefore, it’s time for us to shoulder our responsibilities. It’s time for us to get serious. It’s time for us to put every effort into everything we do. We will not let our ourselves down. We will make us all proud.
Thank you, everybody. Thank you! Thank you!
