Today I took a part in the Hangzhou High School SPOTLIGHT Public Forum Debate which is only founded this year. Our topic is whether China should legalize the Organ Trade or not. It is my first time to get in touch with the American debate, so it is a valuable experience for me. Luckily, Jenny and I got the champion. It truly aroused both of us feelings.
We were competing each other in the knock-out system. First we had four rounds to accumulate points for eliminating half of the participants. Then we had the Top 8 competing and the semifinals. At last is the Finals.
First, it is my honor to have such a amazing teammate who named Jenny. She is really good at English, both the oral part and the testing part. I really admire her because of her discriminating mode of thinking. She is full of resource in any emergency. Jenny prepared a lot of information on both sides, and she can use it convincingly during the debate. Though it is the first time for us to participate in such a competition, but I can say that we made a really good team. No matter before the debate or during it, we all have a tacit mutual understanding.
Secondly, I would like to talk about my own thoughts. The first point is that I have realized the vocabulary matters a lot. If you do not have rich vocabulary, you cannot even understand what your opponents had said. Obviously, you cannot clarify your opinions clearly.
The second point is we have to pay full attention on what you are doing. It is a essential factor that can measure your score. Because of the great amount of information you have to receive at every per minute. It is obvious that focusing on what the opponents said is quite important. Otherwise, we cannot fight back by finding their loopholes.
Thirdly, we have to have logical mode of thinking and speaking. We can get high grade if our constructed speech is going through in regular sequence and we argue with learning and logic. While debating, you have to control the speed of your speaking. If not, you may let your refutation less powerful and persuasive.
Though the debating skills are the basic, as a matter of fact, debate is not all about that. There is still something to do with some tricky speaking skills. Sometimes we have to act according to changing circumstances. That is certain that we quibbled sometimes when we out of words, but we have always found a way to turn the wrong theory into a correct one. We call it “act indecently”.
Most importantly, we need positive mentality when we are participating in any competition. There is a common knowledge to know that mentality can decide the final result. From my experience, every time I expect too much or care too much about the score, there is always accident happens that can cause problems. On the other hand, if I put all of my energy on preparing and enjoying the process instead of worrying about the price I will get fruitful surprise.
To speak the plain truth, both Jenny and I have never imagined that we would win the champion, because we are terribly shocked that we were going to compete a team which is formed with two Senior One student and one of them is a mixed-blood of American and Chinese. English is more likely the mother language to him, so his pronunciation is fantastic and their Rebuttal is really convincing. Fortunately, we have not met some other strong teams. Maybe they have the potential strength to gain a price.
At last, I must commit that I have learned a lot from this incredible experience. Most importantly, I want to thank Jenny for providing such valuable information about this debate and being such an amazing teammate. Despite that, I also want to thank my schoolmates and my family for being so supportive. I hope I can still do a great job with Jenny in the next debate competition.
