读进新时代，书写新征程——记我校学生在浙江中小学生英语整本书阅读与写作活动中喜获佳绩

深入学习贯彻党的二十大精神，提高国民思想道德素质和科学文化素质，建设社会主义文化强国，增强国家文化软实力，以中宣部《关于促进全民阅读工作的意见》为指导，开展各种形式的主题读书活动，营造“好读书、读好书”的浓厚氛围，建设学习型社会，是全面建设社会主义现代化国家新征程的重要措施。

为响应全民阅读的号召，同时扩大学生阅读量，提高学生整体阅读水平和写作能力，激发学生阅读兴趣，培养学生阅读习惯，提升学生阅读素养，我校初中外文组组织学生参加了中国外语教材与教法研究中心和上海外语教育出版社举办的“读进新时代，书写新征程——浙江中小学生英语整本书阅读与写作活动”，得到了初中师生的热烈响应。

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby tells a story of wealth, dreams, and failure. The novel is narrated by Nick, Gatsby's neighbor. Being an eccentric billionaire, Gatsby often threw extravagant parties at his house. Despite his high living, Gatsby was frustrated because his ex-lover, Daisy, was married to Tom. With Nick's help, the three of them met. As Tom revealed that Gatsby's fortune came from illegal gambling and bootlegging, Daisy refused to claim his love for Gatsby. She killed a woman while driving under great emotional suffering, but Gatsby took the blame and was shot dead eventually.

In this book, Gatsby's character impressed me the most. He made every endeavor to regain Daisy's love, but wealth didn't bring him success. Since Daisy was unwilling to give up her social status, she stayed with Tom instead of taking the risk. I believe Gatsby deserves to be called "great" for his pure intentions to chase his dream. In the face of suspicion from others, he took the challenges courageously and fought on. I really look up to his incredible faith and perseverance.

On the other hand, his failure illustrated the danger of devoting himself to the wrong ideal. It is this misguided desire that led to his ultimate downfall, exposing the truth that dreams may not come true through hard work and determination. The tragic story of Gatsby suggests that the American Dream is not real, just as wealth does not equal happiness. In the luxury houses where men and women were devoid of love and empathy, Gatsby was doomed to be left out. By writing this novel, the author appeals to people to find love and values back in the emptiness of life. In my view, these things still count very much with practical significance nowadays, so we should always stick to them!

Changes Can Happen

Mary Lennox, who used to be spoiled by her servants and neglected by her unloving parents, was orphaned because of a cholera epidemic. Mary had to be sent to England to live with her widowed uncle, Archibald Craven. Mr. Craven was always depressed after his wife’s death and locked down her garden. Mary was told not to explore the house, but accidentally she discovered the Secret Garden and her ailing cousin Colin - both of them were forbidden to Mary. Gradually, Mary befriended Colin, her maid Martha’s brother Dickon and the gardener Ben. With the help of Dickon and Ben, both Mary and Colin changed their attitude towards their lives. Mr. Craven also recovered from sadness.

What I have learned from the story is as long as you have the will, changes can happen. Colin had always believed he would stay on the wheelchair forever, but with friends’encouragement, he found the courage to walk and finally succeeded. Mary didn’t know how to love until she thrived to put her instinctive love to the garden, and later to people around her.

In the story, Mary’s change impresses me the most. Instead of burying herself in the loss of parents, she chose to embrace the outside world and the people around her. In the beginning it was hard since Mary's actions often had the opposite effect, but she held on to her will and transformed from a girl being hated by many to a compassionate and considerate girl. Hence, she is my role model in a way, influencing me in my pursuit of self-improvement.

A perfect ending is a rejuvenated outlook on life. I believe not only the characters but also every one of us will benefit from changes that come from our willpower.
