本次高中组半决赛的题目“Things I Wish to Say to the Party”,正是这样一种历史自觉的体现。
感谢杭外对我心智上的哺育和熏陶,感谢陆旻老师严谨务实与高瞻远瞩兼具的赛前指导,以及一整个学年来莫大的鼓励,关怀,教诲与鞭策;
Things I Wish to Say to the Party
Clearly I can still recall that day----1919.5.4, with both its heroic splendor and its deepest grief.
Around 102 years later, I am standing here, making this speech. I just finished a session of the meetings of PKUNMUN not long ago. As the delegate of a nation, I mainly focused on the harrowing child soldier issue and worked on the urgent solutions with other delegates. Fully engaged with the meeting and its aim, I felt a sense of responsibility and the commitment to all human beings’ better life was spontaneously aroused inside me.
When I was speaking on the platform of MUN on behalf of a country, two diplomatic moments suddenly came into my mind. Two cycles of sixty years ago, poor and weak, the Qing Empire of China was forced to sign the humiliating Xinchou Treaty with the Eight-Nation Alliance. 120 years later, China-US strategic dialogue in this March already witnessed our righteous appeal for win-win collaboration, along with our confidence in this nation that we shall by no means be coerced.
Looking back into that epoch 102 years ago, when youthful spirits were incarcerated despite their upbeat struggle, I am more grateful in witnessing how the teens of my generation are learning, growing, and developing on a broader basis of diversity. Through the blurring silhouette of the submissive governors in 1901, and the vibration of our confident voice in the dialogue, I see the lineament of a vast land with a red star above, alongside its people.
These are the changes you have made to our country, CPC, together with our people, by your relentless effort.
I, too, long for a bigger change for myself----a leap from the platform of MUN to the real UN, to confidently convey the voice of China, my beloved motherland, and to dedicate myself to the noble cause of promoting the well-being of the entire human race. Alongside my aspiration there are always something sustaining me along the way. They are these words:
Education, new generation, new era, new duty……
CPC, these words are your pledges, the pleas of our people. Every time they emerge, there are always pulses inside me, reinvigorating me through the pursuit of self-fulfillment and the broader meaning achieved among my fellow people.
CPC, with the relay stick in hand, I truly hope to advance toward my dream, following the rhythm of your uplifted march.
History as a mirror
Tang Emperor Taizong was reputed to have said: “With history as a mirror, one can understand the rise and fall of a state.” History is surely capable, once wisely used, of guiding individuals, nations and even the whole humankind.
Firstly, history can be a mirror guiding an individual. Besides being a textbook about causes and effects, it also consists of legendary figures from whom a multitude of virtues arose. Self-enrichment is to be found from Confucius, the craving for knowledge from Socrates. Diligence can be cultivated through learning from Sima Guang, and patriotism can be heartfelt in Qian Xuesen’s deeds. Setting all these role models is of particularly great significance, especially when youngsters nowadays tend to blindly worship online celebrities and be induced by Fan Culture. Those who bore the crystallization of humankind,on the contrary, are truly worthy of admiration for generations.
Secondly, history can be a mirror guiding a nation. For one thing, enlightenment can be gained, followed by policies adjusted according to recorded failures. From the suffering of the people under mal-governance, we have learnt the importance of putting the people in the first place. For another, confidence and insight can also be gained through a glimpse of history. Because of our prevalence over all hardships and all the great achievements made in the past 100 years, our faith in the Party and the socialism with Chinese characteristics is further strengthened. In addition, there are same patterns in history wisely followed, with the Belt and Road Initiative being an example.
The last and the most important guide offered by history is for the entire humankind. It is revealed by history through the agonizing experience of colonialism that human needs a reformed global governance system conceived upon the basis of equity. It is learnt from the costly victory of World War II that we shall stand united in the face of tyranny. It is clearer than ever before that we are in urgent need of a human community with a shared future for all history has shown to us.
Yet in the end, it is worth keeping in mind that although the core law of history undeniably governs our future, it is still necessary to always adapt things to the context of present. And I believe by doing so, history will surely be a mirror that reflects the light of past, illuminating the unknown darkness on our way forward.
