本次冬令营最后有一个主题为“What does resilience mean to you in the time of global pandemic? How do you stay resilient in this difficult time?”

I was voluntary to take the winter camp about presentation and surprisingly found it way better than I expected. The classes provided not only useful knowledge of how the presentation should be but also a chance to communicate remotely with foreigners for 7 days. In some way, they were not my teachers, they were my new friends. The teachers were all professors from the University of Toronto, one of the top 30 universities in the most famous rankings. I met a friendly and voluble teacher Andy Curtis. He is an experienced and humorous speaker. He has traveled to over 100 countries to give his presentations. I earned more friends such as Jersey, who is one year senior to me in HFLS. After this winter camp, I received my award of the third prize of the 9~11 grade for my hard work and participation, which means I got ¥1290 back from ¥3990. If you are good enough, you are also able to take the classes for free by winning the first prize. Also, I found myself more confident with such practical techniques while my biggest fear was to present in public before.

During the winter vacation, I participated in the public speaking winter camp held by the University of Toronto. It was a unique experience for me, as it taught me some useful skills and abilities in an uncommon way.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the vast distance between China and Canada, the whole course was online in Microsoft Teams. Also, the time difference made it even harder for the teachers. However, their lessons were still incredibly informative, helpful, and interesting. The teachers were all professionals, with jobs ranging from English Professors to Public Lecturers, and they shared some of their experience and technics with us.
My most favorite course was taught by Maren. She introduced an especially effective method of breathing. The deep breaths help relax people’s minds and bodies. I actually tried this before my speech at the final competition. I was so nervous that I almost forgot my words, but I asked the judges if I could take a moment to take a breath. As soon as I did that, all my worries were blown away.
Furthermore, quite a few of my original opinions were completely altered. One of the teachers once mentioned that practice alone doesn’t make perfect. Instead, practice with self-reflecting does. He said that merely repeating is no use, and perhaps is even harmful, as repeating mistakes can only make the situation worse.
This knowledge I got was valuable, and I believe, after the week of learning about public speaking, I will improve myself even more and get more opportunities.

'What does resilience mean to you in the time of global pandemic? How do you stay resilient in the hard time?' When I first got this topic which I need to give a presentation in the final competition, I had no idea about what to speak in the presentation or how to speak up before public.
Fortunately, I soon learned some useful techniques of how to give a great presentation from my teachers in the winter camp, such as adding questions to engage your audience, focusing on your main idea and using humor every now and then. But I think a great presentation is more than the techniques. The choice of your main idea is more important. I talked about my resilient family and used an elastic as a prop. Also, I think presentation is a kind of communication. And you need to let your audience believe you. How do I manage that? The answer is: confidence. A confident speaker can always take control of the situation. So I practice a lot to make myself more confident, and asked my friends to give me some advice. In practicing, I found my own way of presenting: A slow-pace of speaking, using props and body language.
In fact, giving presentations wasn’t as hard as I thought before. And I hope everyone could find their own way of presenting.

I took part in the University of Toronto “Green Path” Cup Public Speaking Competition Winter Camp this winter vacation. It lasted for 7 days from Feb.1st to 7th. During the first 5 days, there were different teachers giving lessons about public speaking. These classes included power point making, body language, storytelling, tone and pitch and confidence and passion.
The last 2 days, there was a public speaking competition. I was lucky to compete in the final. Students from different places and ages shared their ideas about “Resilience during the global pandemic”. I recalled my own lockdown period in the global pandemic and practiced the skills I got in the lessons. Luckily, I won the third prize. It was a very special experience. I have got to know more about public speaking and have made some new friends. I cherished the opportunity.
