Hurrah!
It’s over!
After 18 or 19 years, perhaps 14 or 15 in school, and 3 years in the CAL Centre,
finally it’s time to make your way into the big wide world.
No more morning assemblies
No more evening study or form time
No more SAT, TOEFL, application essays or personal statements . . .
FREEDOM beckons!
For myself, this year at the CAL Centre has been, without a doubt the hardest working, and probably the most stressful, of my adult life.
Even so, it has been an immensely rewarding time which I will look back on with great fondness
I’ve worked with high school students through 3 different decades, in the UK and here in China.
The first students I worked with in China are now parents themselves.
I have invariably found high school students a great pleasure to know, to teach, and to spend time with
And of course the students at Hang Wai are no exception
Watching young people develop from the starry eyed, overawed youngsters of Year 1,
into the confident, ambitious individuals of Year 2,
and then turn into the cynical, stressed out and world weary young adults of Year 3
always reaffirms my faith in humanity, and in society;
and takes me back to those dim and distant days when I too was a teenager
(hard as that might be to imagine).
What has struck me very favourably this year is the maturity of the Class of 2017
Year 3 students need to make difficult decisions as to how to allocate their time between the various demands pulling them in different directions
Are your applications more important than your studies?
Do your SATs carry more weight than your extra curricula’s?
As you get older the decisions are not going to get any easier,
But I doubt there will be many times in your life when you have to balance quite so many different demands pulling you in so many different directions
It’s ironic that the choices that we make about Higher Education are quite likely to have the most impact on our futures of any decision we ever make
And yet, we do not, and cannot, really know what the consequences of those decisions are
You might fail to reach your dream university, but instead meet someone who will become your business or research partner
And together, develop something that will improve the lives of everyone on the planet – who knows?
Deciding to go to the library, or the gym (or the bar) will affect who you meet and talk to, and can totally change the future development of your life
And yet there’s no way of knowing which choice is going to lead to which outcome
All we can do is act as seems right at the time, face the consequences of our actions, and not dwell too much on missed opportunities
Class of 2017, you are a wonderful group of individuals, and it has been a privilege to know you, if only for a short time
I hope, like me, you too can look back at your time in the CAL Centre with fondness and lots of happy memories.
I don’t have time to stand here and talk about the many different individuals who have impressed me for one reason or another during the course of the year
In my maths classes, or in preparing for university interviews, or just in the day-to-day encounters which happen throughout the weeks and months
While I’m sure that many of you who will go on to do outstanding things,
please remember, you are all exceptional individuals and I wish you all a long, happy and successful future.
It’s traditional, before I sign off, to offer a few words of wisdom,
So I’d like to finish by asking you to remember,
Just because you’re cleverer than someone doesn’t mean you can’t learn something from them
Just because you’ve travelled more widely than someone doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from their point of view
Just because you’re taller than someone doesn’t mean you should look down on them
Thank you all, and the very best of luck in all your future endeavours

Education plus application lead to Innovation – Become World Changers
Generation WC
In Jamaica, it is common for homes to place a mat at their front door for people to wipe their feet before entering the house. Most mats would have the word WELCOME written in bold letters. On a visit to a rural area for an event, I walked passed a house and there was the mat. On this mat however, were the words, “Oh no, you again!” With this said, I apologise to 3A and 3C, as after two years with me in Physics class a few of you might just be thinking, “Oh no, you again!” Nevertheless, regardless of your thoughts, I deem it an honour to stand before you in this capacity.
I promise you will gain at least one thing; maybe the knowledge that you should never to have me speak again.
Let me say it has been my sincere joy and esteemed pleasure to have served you over the past two years. No! I am not just trying to make things sound good; you should know me by know. As a matter of fact, apart from the times when we actually tried learning Physics, I think we had some wonderful times together. Time really does go by quickly though. It is now, at the end of it all, that I realise how much I want to say to you. If I had known it would have gone by so quickly, I would have wasted less time trying to fill your brains with things you will never use, and take more time to talk with you about things that you would not afford not to use.
You have been given an object. I want you to imagine for a moment that that object you have is a seed. Now imagine that that seed is you. There are a few things to think about.
Regardless of where the seed is planted, the nature of the tree will be the same. The fruit a tree bears does not depend on where it is planted. It is dependent on what the seed is. Do not worry yourselves if you did not get into your dream university; that is not what determines who you become.
Some may say, ‘ah that’s true, but the soil helps to determine the quality of the fruit.’ You are right. But what if the soil, in this case is your mind. Your attitude. It is truly your attitude that determines the quality of the fruit that you will produce, and not the where you go to produce.
Some time ago, there was a storm in the UK. It amazed some people that some huge trees had fallen in a particular area, while in another area, where the storm was more severe, same smaller trees weathered the storm quite well. After consultation with the geographers, it was found that in the area where the huge trees had fallen, the water table was very high and therefore the roots of these trees did not go deep into the ground, the trees were quite satisfied and fully nourished having shallow roots. On the other hand, in the area where the storm was more severe, but the trees stood firm, the water table was low. This meant the roots of those trees had to go deep into the ground to get to water. I ask this question a lot; “Why are you doing Physics?” A common response is, “it is the subject I am most likely to get an A in.” Do not settle for the path of least resistance. The simpler a challenge is, the smaller and more insignificant, the growth. Do not select courses simply because you believe they will bring you an easy ‘A.’ Of what benefit will it be if it costs you scarcely anything to gain something. Do miss out of the joy of success that comes through sweat and tears; success achieved through pain and strain.
Go! Bloom wherever you take root. Regardless of where you find yourself. Remember, it is not the where; it is the attitude that gets you there.
As I was growing up, I used to hear on a consistent basis, that knowledge is power. As I went on the quest for a little knowledge, in order to gain a little power, I realise that the saying was from the truth. I did gain a little knowledge, but no power came along with it at all. I realised from then that it was not knowledge that is power, but rather the use of knowledge.
Secondly the seeds you have also represent what people have planted in your lives. Over the past three years, we have poured into you and in so doing, passed on knowledge in a number of areas. However, education is not the end all and be all. Education does not give you products. Education gives you ingredients, components or parts. Education only works, when it is coupled with application. Without application, you are no better off with a PhD, than someone who has never been to school. Perhaps in fact, you would be worse off, for the one who did not go to school did not waste time packing the mind with things that will never be used.
Let me be among those you will encourage you to go to dream university or wherever you will be planted, and shine. Get the A’s and the GPA’s of 4.0. While you are at it, why not just graduation top of your class? You have it within you. Dream it...Achieve it...Live it.
However, let me be one of a few who will pull you back to earth and share with you reality. The world has long stopped looking for people who can simply get A’s or just regurgitate. We found that anyone can regurgitate; especially shortly after a meal.
We are not looking for people who can copy, but people who can create.
Not people who can imitate (though it’s said it’s the highest form of flattery) but people who can initiate
Not path followers, but pathfinders. The world is looking for people who can conceive bright ideas. The pilots, the navigators, the originators, the critical thinkers, the paradigm shifters and I dare say again, the world changers.
As of today, you will no longer be students of Hangzhou Foreign Language School, Cambridge A’ Level Centre. The place you now call your school, will in short order be called your alma mater. For some of you it will be great prospective of a future, living and studying in a new country. For others it will be like freedom from shackles. No pun intended. For most of you, it will simple mean rejoicing that your phones will never again be confiscated by Mr. McFarlane. Maybe if you had thought about it before, you would have graduated a long time ago.
Alas, we send you out into a whole that might be a bit strange. One thing for sure, we are sending you into a world that does not come with any...wait for it...mark scheme. Often, you will not know if your choices are the best and the consequences to your action may not be revealed until sometime after and there will be no mark scheme to check it. So the question is, are you ready for this? Well! After three years of pouring into you, we would hope the answer is a resounding yes. Instead, however, reality hits again and it is an emphatic no. You are not ready to face the world. So what do you do? Do you stay and not skip the page of life onto the next chapter and wait until you are sure you are ready? Of course not! If you were to wait until you think you are fully ready to take on a new challenge, then you would never move forward. The fact is, no matter how many years you send, how much is poured into you, or how much knowledge you acquire, you will never be full ready. That fact should never stop you from taking steps towards realising your dreams and fulfilling your potentials.
I gave a bit of class work and went around the room checking students’ work. I noticed one student not working. Why are you not attempting the problem?” I asked. “I am not sure how to do it and I do not want to get it wrong. I will wait until it’s done on the board and then record it,” the student replied. That may ring a big, for at least one of you. I say to you to today; ‘Do not fair to try because you fair to fail.’ As you go from here be careful of what you absorb; your minds are like fertile soil.
You are generation Z. You, among other things are the tech savvy ones.
Today I dub you “Generation WC.” “Generation World Changers.”
You are the ones who will begin to make the change the world has been dreaming about for decades.
The WCs will be the ones who will not sit around and wait for things to happen, they will make things happen.
The WCs will not conform to what is considered the norm, but will seek to transform and challenge ills that are around them.
WCs will be environmentally conscious, finding never ways to harness clean energy and make use of refuse.
WCs will be the generation of concerned world citizens, thinking not only of themselves, community or nation, but having a broad view of the world and lobby for changes that will bring things like clean drinking water to places such as those found in India and feeding the hungry in areas such as those found in Burundi, East Africa.
WCs will be full of integrity. You are you who will not take credit for what you did not do. Your work will stand up to the highest levels scrutiny. You will turn up on time and give of your best all the times.
You are the generation with discipline and patience. You will wait your turn at the checkout counter and the traffic light and will not seek to undermine authority, you will ride and drive on the correct side of the road, use the sidewalk for walking, not park just where you feel like. For you will have concern for others.
The WCs are the ones who will feel odd doing the right thing, because it seems everyone else is doing what’s wrong. In your eyes, right will be right and the only thing to do and wrong will be wrong, such you shy from.
Thirdly, you seed represents what you will sow into other people’s lives. As you have climbed on the shoulders of giants to get to where you are now, so too when you become a giant you must provide your shoulders for others to climb on, so that they too may get to their goals. Sow positive seeds into the lives of people around you, into doing so, you will only help to create a positive world for yourself to live in.
Red envelope
I have in my possession a red envelope to give to the one who wants it most. Which of you want it most? You will never accomplish anything my mere wishing, dreaming or desiring; regardless of how strong there are. You must rise up move forward and work fervently towards achieving your goals.
Lastly, take a course this summer – keep your brain active. I don’t mean one of those boring academic courses that you most likely want to do. Take something like a cooking course. Everyone knows that western food does not taste good. What other reason would so many of us find our way to the east. Learn to prepare your favourite Chinese dish. In that way, you may also share it with your new western friend and in so doing educate them on what some people say is the best part of any culture, the food. Or you may want to take a sewing course. Why should you put away your favourite sweater simply because it is missing a button?
I pray your journey in life will not always be like a walk in the park on a cool sunny summer Sunday afternoon, but will present enough challenge that will help to bring out the very best in you.
I wish you God’s blessing and protection. All the best as you reach beyond here.
Mr. Dwight McFarlane

Distinguished teachers, parents and fellow students:
Good afternoon!
Today is 2017 June 9th, the 1022nd day in HFLS. Today is the day we have just finished our “GAOKAO exam”—— the A-level exam which lasted for one month. Today is also the last day for us to assemble here, dressing in our school uniform. In this special day, I would like to share three stories, to conclude how we have grown and changed in HFLS.
The first story is about myself, about how HFLS transformed me into an independent and assertive person. I will enroll in Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, majoring in Hospitality Management. I have heard many voices from my parents and other relatives ever since I made up my mind to further my studies on this major three years ago. Few of them were supportive. However, people held different views here at HFLS. I still remember how my seniors kindled my passion and how my college counselors navigated my way. Remember when we talk about HFLS, we talk about diversity and inclusiveness. It is exactly these valuable qualities that made my way to Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, and now I realized it is worthwhile to choose HFLS and believe in HFLS.
Recently I’ve watched a popular micro-movie made by our schoolmates - Things you’ll be accused of being a HFLSER. I was impressed by one sentence inside– “Perhaps HFLS is the first and the last place I get to be myself; for me, it became a way of thinking.” What HFLS has left me was not only knowledge but also the courage and wisdom to decide when to go and where to go. In another word, it inspires me to “stay hungry and stay foolish”. Without such inspiration, I might not choose to go to Switzerland for college. Without such inspiration, I might not choose such a less-known major. Today we are leaving HFLS and we are heading towards our new journey. Will we move on with wisdom and courage as we do now? I hope that in five years, ten years, twenty years or even longer, when we meet again, everybody would give a “yes” as our confident response.
The second story is about my classmates, about the meaning of friendship and solidarity. Three days ago, my classmate G broken his leg when playing basketball. He was one of the protagonists of the commencement drama. It was only two days before the scheduled performance. To my surprise, Jerry, the understudy, took over the role and finally performed well in the drama. One of my classmates also set up a live broadcast for G, who is in the hospital, making up for his concerns. A great many events like this happen every day around us.
Indeed, the free atmosphere here in HFLS offers us limitless space for personal growth. Look at the commencement today; we students planned and organized the venue, the entire process and performances. Speaking about this, something flashed in my mind – the Chinese essay topic of this year’s Gaokao exam in Zhejiang Province. For me, HFLS is the ‘book without words’: behind these wonderful events, we are facing conflicts and difficulties, as well as pleasure and happiness. Our fulfilling years in HFLS brings irreplaceable memories. And more importantly, we acquire strong leadership and social communication skills, something that cannot be learnt through the "books with words" alone.
No word would be sufficient to depict the friendship, solidarity, and love that we develop among ourselves. The powerful wisdom of our class and school comes from every member’s subtle wit in our intellectual community. I hope that as we reach for higher stages in the future, we will communicate such spirit and culture to other communities; influencing larger groups of people, making full use of the treasures that we collected in HFLS.
The third story is about our tradition, about the treasures we HFLSers passed on for generations. I believe that we all share the following experiences: joining so many seminars in which alumni told their stories of their college lives, reading so many articles in Sparkle about their college application, seeking for so many pieces of advice from them regarding essays, interviews, etc. Without their help, we would never be so well informed and prepared for the future. Today, many of my peers have become the authors of Sparkle, passing on that wisdom. We followed the steps of our predecessors, and meanwhile we realize that our legacy is the key to the prosperity of HFLS and the success of our juniors. I sincerely hope that we hold the tradition, be grateful, come back often, and share ideas without reservation.
Last but not least, I’d like to say thanks to a lot of people. Thanks to CAL-Center which supported us for three years. Thanks to our teachers who taught us with full passion. Thanks to our parents who fostered us. Thanks to our senior students who helped us. Thanks to our classmates who accompanied day and night. Also thanks the all school staffs who served us.
At this moment, we are still HFLS students, but when we step out of the school gate today, we will become HFLS’s alumni. Today is the end our high school life; today is also the beginning of our college life. It’s time to say goodbye. Let us leave HFLS, a place full of laughter and hope, with laughter and hope. I wish you all the best in your future!
Thank you!
