“Monster”

“Playing with Fire”

What is vision after all? Claude Monet might claim it is the blurred patches of shadow and light. Warren Buffett might assert it is the mystical intuition of men. Helen Keller said: the only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. And I think she voiced out the most crucial definition of the word “vision”, which is to identify who you are and to pursue your own goal with concentration and perseverance.
Many people eulogize that human life is a poem, while I consider human life without vision as walking alone in a dark jungle. All around is endless, invariant trees which can never be seen through. It is very hard to trek in the jungle for rattans crawl in the way and all the paths resemble each other so much. In that case, I believe the most vital tool for the traveler is a torch, a torch to shine his terminus, a torch inside himself, a torch named “vision”. Indeed, if you do not have a destination for your journey, you are just drifting through life like a ship without a rudder.
Friedrich Nietzsche once was a strayed traveler as well. Beginning his career as a Classical Philology professor at the University of Basel, Nietzsche gradually found philology dull and unanimated. He loathed the idea of merely being a scholar who only grinded down old materials and then forged pretenses with new decoration. Instead, he wanted to be an authentic philosopher to search for the meaning of life. Though his unprecedented ideas were taunted and ignored, Nietzsche stayed calm and determined, wrote with passion and compassion, because his vision to re-estimate all values guided him through the darkness. He began a ten-year wandering across Europe which later proved to be the most prolific period of his life
Now, in the dim light of his torch flare, the traveler would be able to wade through the labyrinth and discover a magnificent waterfall. “Stand on the top!” a voice cries. However, the road to summit is even tougher, worsened by the constant lures to rest idly on the hillside, to linger on the exotic flowers nearby, or to forget hardship along with vision.
Li Yanhong, founder and CEO of Baidu, the internet-search giant in China, once recounted his life experience in his 2008 commencement address at Peking University. He said it’s hard to imagine how many temptations a developing company would have: for instance, many of his engineers left Baidu at its early stage because they wanted to set foot in lucrative business like e-commerce or portal website. Yet Li insisted focusing on company’s core competitiveness, search engine service, because he realized how beautiful it is to connect the right person to the right information with just a click of mouse. Specializing in Chinese-based search, his enterprise embraced its heyday before long .In 2007, Baidu became the first Chinese company to be included in the NASDAQ-100 index. Up to now, it has shared nearly 75% of China's Internet-search revenue. Mr. Li proclaimed proudly:” Back then, Baidu was able to do one hundred things, but we only chose one thing. One must relinquish some things to endeavor for the best.”
Well, when the fortunate traveler finally makes it to the top, breathing the chilly sweet air while enjoying the awe-inspiring panorama of solemn forest and galloping waters, he must be very grateful to the two visions he possesses: one vision inward, to lift perplexity and illuminate path ahead; One vision outward, to cling to what is right and unremittingly face the wax and wane of life. Just as Siegfried Sassoon put it:” In me the tiger sniffs the rose.”

Good afternoon, dear teachers and fellow students. I'm honored to be here to share with you my understanding of vision.
To my understanding, vision is what you learn about the world and the way you see the world around you. When we were little children, our vision was limited to our family and hometown. When we start our trip, we see the outside world and our vision gets bigger; when we read books, our vision radically expands; when we ponder, our vision gradually deepens.
With a bigger vision, there will be more possibilities. In the movie "Big Fish", the hero said to the giant, "You are a big man; you deserve a bigger world; this small town isn't where you should stay." but we don't really have to be a giant to find ourselves a bigger world if only we are willing to explore. How much we see decides how big we dare to dream. If you do not walk out and see more, like a frog in a well, whose only dream is to jump out, your world might just be the gleam of light above your head. what else can you dream other than fearing whether to jump out or not?
More importantly, a broader vision may change the way we think and the way we act. A person with a big vision does not have to be some prominent figure. The real gift he gains from it is the most distinctive and profound thinking, which enables him to keep his individuality and firmly dedicate to what he really wants to do. You must have heard of the graduate from Yale University working as a village official. Coming back from one of the most distinguished universities, is he wasting his talent and time to stay in a remote village in China? What he has done definitely dispels the doubt. He has helped the villagers improve the irrigation system, set up a modern nursing house and even started a high-tech based class for children. While others are busy making a fortune, his vision drives him to make a difference. Personally, I strongly support his choice.
In my opinion, to make a difference is more important than to make a fortune. When you are doing something to help others, because of your contribution, the world has less hunger, fewer diseases but more happiness. One with a big vision can be fully aware that wealth can fade away quickly if not careful, but those differences made last much longer.
Are you eager to expand your vision and do something valuable, my fellow students? If the answer is yes, then see more. To expand your vision, you should step out and learn more about this world, visit more places and talk to more people. I once participated in a 20-day summer camp in Germany where I met peers from all over the world. During the time, I learned that some Muslims wear headcloth and pray 3 times each day while some not. Similarly, they learned that Chinese really eat with chopsticks every day. The world is so diverse and so thrilling when you get to know it.
Vision is more than knowledge. Being encyclopedic is only part of your big vision. A big vision also requires the ability to think and judge independently. However, the very first understanding of the world we formed is usually so immature that it has to be questioned over and over again. thus we will have to read more, think more and discuss with others, especially those with a broader vision. The German philosopher nietzsche was greatly influenced by schopenhauer, who believed that life is meaningless. However, nietzsche didn't stop there and sigh over life every day, instead, he proposed the theory of will power and encouraged people to be tenacious in life. And till these days, the positive side of nietzsche's thought is highly praised. Standing on the shoulder of giants, we can see farther and yet further, and thus our vision expands and deepens.
A big vsion means a big future and a wonderful life.So my fellow students, don’t hesitate to step out of your small world to see a bigger one. See with your eyes wide open and keep pondering. Till one day, your vision is broad enough to let you dream big. Let’s make it.
