5月22日上午，我校举行2017外语文化节开幕式及升旗仪式。仪式由团委副书记童云波主持。

汪加华老师作主旨演讲。演讲围绕本届外文节主题“小世界，大视野”，从自然、社会等多角度阐述了世界与视野的辩证关系，激励同学们不断地探索、开创。

开幕式上，高三同学分别用中、英、德、法、日、西语六国语言深情并茂地朗诵了鲍勃•迪伦的名作《答案在风中飘扬》，并清唱《We are the world》，展现了他们的人文关怀以及对世界、人生的思考。

 本届外语文化节将持续一周时间，除传统的戏剧之夜、演讲比赛、微电影拍摄等活动之外，还将新增“万国嘉年华”的展示活动，旨在营造良好的外语学习氛围，在实践中增进同学们对外语文化的认识。

Your world is as big as you make it

Good morning, ladies & gentlemen,

    It’s a great honor to be here to give the opening speech for the 2017 Foreign Languages Festival!

    The theme of this year is big eyes, small world. How big actually is this world? Astronomy has so developed that scientists are now able to tell the size of our planet by the radius, volume, mass, density and gravity, etc. Scientists have been searching high and low for the highest and lowest points of the Earth. As we all know, the lowest point on Earth is the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean; while Mount Chomolungma is the highest place on Earth above sea level. But, it is not the highest point on Earth — that is, the place most distant from the center of the Earth. That distinction belongs to Mount Chimaborazo in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador. Although Chimaborazo is about 10,000 feet shorter, this mountain is about 2.4 km farther into space because of the equatorial bulge. However, it’s still not the key to the question. Mount Chomolungma is estimated to be growing about 4 mm each year. What does all that tell us?

   Firstly, things are not always what they appear to be. Neither are people and the world they live in. A couple of years ago, London-based designer Yanko Tsvetkov, released a series of both funny and thought-provoking prejudice maps using infographical maps. Instead of displaying political borders or statistics, his maps make representations of social, cultural and political stereotypes. In the eyes of some people, a certain piece of land is a land of hunger and AIDS, or of little significance, or even Mars or Jupiter; people from some areas are identified as meatball eaters, dwarfs, or housekeepers. You may regard those representations as tongue-in-cheek, that is, not serious as it may seem to be. But to some extent, we’ve got to admit that our vision is restricted and so is our cognition no matter how important we think we are.

   The second implication we can explore is there’s no fixed answers as to where you are from and how you’re identified. According to UNDP, by 2013, the number of people living in countries out of their own had come up to 220 million. This great floating tribe keeps populating this blue planet. As people migrate, cultures take roots wherever they are. 25 years ago, when we went abroad, we yearned for Chinese food; yet, a few days ago, one of our students living in London posted a picture of her cooking authentic bean-curd skin on WeChat. Never ever have we been feeling so connected and involved in a global village.

So, is it a big world or a small world after all? American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “The world only exists in your eyes. You can make it as big.” But as people who have benefited from better public resources, there’s more we can do. Qin, Yuefei(秦玥飞), born of a poverty-stricken family in Chongqing, as well as a graduate and a post-graduate of Yale with a dual major in politics and economics, gave up opportunities for high-paying jobs in banks and securities firms to go back to China and serve rural people in Hejiashan Village, central China's Hunan Province. Qin raised a total of 800,000 yuan to fund public services in his first year on the job: He restored the village canal and expanded the nursing home for the elderly and the young. In addition, Qin raised funds to buy tablet computers for 700 students of four primary and middle schools near Hejiashan. With interactive educational software, students can get remote guidance from volunteer teachers via the Internet. Qin chose to work in a small village to pave way for more people to see a bigger world and to enjoy a better life.  And as for Qin, his vision has never been blocked and his world never confined. For people like him, it’s a big world after all!

女士们，先生们：

早上好！很荣幸站在这里为2017年外语节致辞！今年外语节的主题是“小世界，大视野”这个世界究竟有多大呢？天文学的发展让科学家们可以说出我们星球的半径，体积，质量，密度以及引力科学家们大费周章地寻找地球的最高点和最低点。正如我们所知，地表的最低点在西太平洋的马里亚纳海沟；而珠穆朗玛峰顶端是海平面以上的最高的地方。但是，这不是地球上的最高点，地球的最高点是离地心最远的地方。世界最高峰的荣耀属于安第斯山脉的钦博拉索山。尽管钦博拉索山山体本身比珠穆朗玛峰矮一万英尺这座山峰因赤道隆起带而比珠峰离地心更远2.4千米。然而，这仍不是问题的关键。珠穆朗玛峰据估计正以每年4毫米的速度在变高。所有这一切告诉了我们什么？

首先，事物并不总是像他们所表现得那样。无论是人类还是他们所居住的世界。几年前，一个居住在伦敦名为扬科·萨佛诺夫的设计师发布了一系列使用信息地图绘制的有趣而深刻的“偏见地图”。他的地图展示了社会，文化和政治的偏见而不是行政边界和数据。在某些人眼中，一些地方充斥着饥饿和艾滋病，一些地方微不足道，甚至荒凉如火星或木星。另一些地方的人们则被定义为傻瓜，侏儒或者佣人。你可以将这些指代看作玩笑，确实，它们并不像看起来那样严肃。但是某种程度上来说，我们必须要承认无论我们自认为有多重要，我们的视野和认知能力因为这些偏见受到了限制。

我们可以探索的第二层含义在于“你从哪里来和你如何被定义”是没有确定答案的。根据联合国开发计划署2013年的数据，全世界侨居海外的人口已达到两亿两千万。这个巨大的漂流部落不停地迁徙在这个蓝色星球之上。随着人们的迁徙，文化也随处扎根。25年之前我们出国时，四处渴求中国食物；然而，几天前一位我们住在伦敦的学生在微信上展示了她烹饪原汁原味豆腐皮的照片。我们从未感觉如此被联系和包容于一个“地球村”。

所以，这究竟是一个大世界还是一个小世界？美国作家佛朗西斯·斯科特·菲兹杰拉德曾说这个世界只存在于你的眼睛里，你可以随心所欲地调节它的大小。但是作为得益于更优裕公共资源的我们，可以做得更多。秦玥飞，出生于重庆的贫困家庭，后来获得了耶鲁大学政治学和经济学本科和硕士的双学位，放弃了银行和证券公司的高薪工作回到中国服务湖南省贺家山村的山区人民。秦玥飞在他第一年工作期间为公共服务筹到了共计80万人民币的资金： 他修缮了村庄的运河并扩建了养老院和孕婴房。 除此之外，秦玥飞还筹款为贺家山附近的四所中小学的700名学生购买了平板电脑。学生们可以使用交互式教育软件通过互联网得到志愿者老师的远程指导。秦玥飞选择到一个小村庄工作来为更多人看到更广的世界，享受更好的生活铺平道路。 至于秦玥飞本人，他的视野永远不会被阻隔，他的世界永远不会受限。对于那些像他一样的人，这终究是一个大世界！
