编者按：我校一年一度的外文文化节已经拉开帷幕。作为外文节传统项目，“校友杯”初中英语演讲比赛、“周恩来奖”高中英语演讲比赛将于5月20日下午展开激烈角逐。演讲，不仅展示选手们的语言功底，更强调的是其表达能力、思辨能力和综合素质。让我们一同期待这些英语大咖们的精彩表现吧！

2016外文节“校友杯”初中英语演讲比赛选手赛前说：

大家好，我是来自初三（5）班的陈吉米。我从初一开始便努力学习英语，因此获得了参加本次比赛的机会。我平常爱好广泛，积极参与学校组织的各类活动，并努力在其中崭露头角。我也会在课余时间思考一些深刻问题，提出自己的看法。参赛宣言：

很荣幸能够参加这次比赛，我希望能够在此次比赛中领悟到我们学校历任校友传承的精神，进一步提高自身的英语水平和思考问题的能力，同时检验自己初中以来的学习成果，为未来做准备。最后，我想说一句参赛口号：“Fight for the Alumni Cup, we will win!”

This is Lisa who tended to dream big but do little in the past. It seems a huge contradiction when one craves for broader horizons and realization of self virtues, yet holds such great fear when it comes to practically doing so. The competition provides me with a chance to wave farewell to my former self, and getting the opportunity alone has already given me a tremendous amount of pleasure and gratitude. I’ll try my very best, not for triumph, but for self rediscovery.

Hi everyone, I am Billy, from Class 2 Junior 3. It is being so honored to be chosen to attend this competition! I am a lover of English, yes, LOVER. I think using English can make me more fulfilled in life. And sharing my experience with others is also the one I enjoy. I have participated in several English Speaking Contests, and have done some researches on English reading and writing. I believe that I can learn a lot through this competition, with my friends! “I believe humanity was born from conflict.” This is one of my favorite lines from the American TV drama Criminal Minds. I am also filled with this unique contradiction. While I am not always outgoing, I enjoy expressing myself through words. While I prefer mild ways to deal with matters, I also have a very persistent and persuasive side. While I enjoy being with my family, I am an independent person who have passion for explorations into new environment and new people. I am a part of the world, with interesting diversions, and in this world the only thing that will never change is change itself.

Hi everyone, I’m Karl from class 3A Junior 3. It’s really an honor for me to participate in this competition. I have taken part in acting different English dramas and I enjoy doing it. I’m also going to act in Peter Pan on drama night and I’m really looking forward to it. I think that I’ve learned a lot from this kind of experiences. Watching <Star War>, listening to OneRepublic playing Starcraft, that’s the way I spend my free time. (Although I don’t have much at the moment.) Hope you can enjoy my performance in the English Festival.

Hello everyone, my name is Charlotte. I'm from Class 4A and I'll be 15 this September. But -- well, that's not important at all. What matters is -- what I am like.

I'm a girl, as you can see. And my star sign is Virgin, that makes me a little like a perfectionist. I am a lover of history, especially histories about Europe and North America. I think studying things happened in the past can make me understand what happens now. I'm also a fan of music. And guess what kind of music do I love the most? It's heavy metal. You feel surprise? Well, many of my friends feel surprise, too. But that's me! I'm always attracted by things which I can feel freedom through them. And rock is my attitude towards life. Also, absolutely, I'm a lover of foreign language learning. I'm now learning English and German and that helps me understand more about foreign cultures.

Since the very beginning of English learning, I’ve never stopped reading English, not only textbooks, but any other things about English. Expresising is the tool, while reading gives me far more satisfaction.

May the books I’ve read be your guide. My words may not be the most fabulous, but I’m trying my best to make them more convincing; my thoughts may not be the most powerful, but I’m making every effort to make them more rigorous. Remember this chubby boy. He is Matthew from Class 5B, the one that will let you be surprised.

Ciao! I'm Isabella Dong from Class 1A. It is a great honour to be a competent of Alumni Cup English Speech Contest. I'm fond of music, especially for A Cappella, and my most beloved musical group is Pentatonix.

I hope to study psychology or sociology in college.

I want to be a great HFLSer as my seniors all do.

I always believe that we should try our best in what we want to achieve. I’ve carried out this goal in the past years, and I will accomplish it this time as well.

My name is Victor, Victor stands for 'the winner'. As the name implies, I'm a person who tries to excel others all the time. Being like that really exhausts me, but my triumph always makes me forget my pain. English is one of my favorite subjects. All my passion toward English can be concluded by four words: blood, toil, tears and sweat. This summer, I'm taking part in the Alumni Cup speech contest, which will be another challenge for me. It's my honor to be chosen for this competition. All of my friends back me up, so I'm not fighting on my own. As my motto tells me: Doing my best isn't enough, I have to do THE best. Only one is gonna be the champion, and I’m gonna be the champion. I can do more than just get by; I will get ahead, and stay ahead! I’m hitting my road to earn this cup, because it’s my turn to fight for honor this time. I hope for your support. Looking forward to seeing you all on May 20th!

2016外文节“周恩来奖”高中英语演讲比赛选手赛前说：

在杭外想要学好英语很简单。要预习，那就和备课一样去做。要整理，那就像编教辅一样去做。要背课文，那就做到一字不差。要做展示，那就研究遍所有新闻和资料。要阅读，那就像编辑校稿一样去看。要写作，那就把用法都查一遍。要参加社团活动，那就坚持奉献到底。要考试拿到高分，那就上课认真听讲下课按时交作业……我相信这些简简单单的道理，才是杭外特色的英语学习。

支业繁

没有选择出国，没学过托福雅思；报名过模联，没有被选上；参加过parliamentary debate，没什么进展后来quit。在杭外六年，我并没有充分利用杭外特色的英语学习资源。但是最容易做到的是乖乖听话。我按部就班，该听的课听，该做的作业做。Preview就该是做个把小时的，书摘就该是做个几十页的。日复一日，看似简单的也挺难的。大概正因此我得到参加这个演讲比赛的资格，但是如此poor的英语活动经历让我不得不感到慌张。希望在以后的学习生活里，unlike me，大家都能做到填补弱项，强化优势。

能够参加周恩来演讲比赛是一种幸运和荣誉。周爷爷的名字，始终被包围在杭外创办人的光芒下，对一代代杭外人来说，拥有一种特殊而崇高的意义。小小的一方讲台，见证了杰出的学长学姐们在将离开杭外之时耀眼的最后一闪。想到这里，我一个小小的“杭外毕业生to-be”似乎因为一个名字一方讲台一种气质和过去连结了起来，好奇妙啊。

杭外六年，英语不知不觉地长进，背课文､做对话､做project的学习方式也很可能陪我投入大学中的语言学习。对此我心怀感激，并且希望在校园学习的最后时刻，向教导我的老师们、学校和周爷爷致敬。

如果英语是罗马，那么我们都走在我们自己的道路上，有着自己独特的想法与追求。高中三年，我越加相信我们正向自己所笃信的目标坚定前行，在自己所陌生的世界中不懈探索。我们了解英语绝非仅仅“工具”两字所能概括，当我们把英语仅仅看成是一个工具时，我们就忽视了它的深远魅力，错过了它从历史深处传来的人文传统，丢弃了它所包含的思辨精神。愿与诸位一道，拾起路上的风景，放在生活的篮子里，藉此寻访它的广度与深度。

This Speech Contest is the first and the last in my high school life. Not that it is only precious because its attachment with the word 'last', or 'first', but because we HFLSers are here, within this campus, having fun with English.

英语演讲对我个人有很大的影响。从希望之星到议会制辩论，我学会走出自己的舒适区，去批判地思考问题，有效地表达观点，以逻辑和言语影响身边的人。和学校里诸多优秀同学中的几个一起在演讲台上碰撞出思想的火花，很好地为中学生涯画上句号，又提醒我在接下来的四年里积极地去突破和发声。

有很多事情是可以预计的-比如说几个月后会毕业，食堂的小笼包去早了就会没有蒸好，或者周五下午六点的杭城会堵车。但是有更多事情是我无法预计的，比如说毕业前的这次演讲比赛。我喜欢这些无法预计的事情。我相信语言不是为它们本身而学的，而是为了给我打开一个新世界的大门，刚好还被学校的标准认可这是一个多么令人愉快的事情。

就像是早去了食堂发现今天新推出了烧卖，正在冒着热气一样。愿大家都好好加油，并心怀这些出人意料的烧卖，享受在杭外的学习时光！
