不要等到想起应该优雅时才露出微笑;
不要等到孤单时才想起朋友;
不要等到想要得到爱时才付出;
不要等到有了最好的职位时才努力工作;
不要等到失败时才记起他人的忠告;
不要等到生病时才意识到生命的脆弱;
不要等到分离时才后悔没有珍惜感情;
不要等到腰缠万贯时才准备帮助穷人;
不要等到临死时才发现自己没有真正热爱过生活;
Good Morning Guests, Principal Fung, Shakle, Teaching Staff, Parents and last but not least Graduates of Hangzhou Foreign language School.
So here we are you all made it! There were times when I wasn’t quite sure. I look at the audience on this very proud occasion and I can see students that I laughed with, who I supported through difficult times and students I gave direction too.
But through all of this I can quite confidently say that you all have been a credit to Hangzhou Foreign Languages School and China. It has been my privilege to have known you all.
A graduation ceremony is always such a special occasion - the culmination of years of hard work; the actualization of goals attained and the acknowledgement of successes achieved. So, it is only fitting that today we commemorate the road that you have all travelled together these last few years.
It has been a journey that started with tentative steps perhaps, but one that has taken us to remarkable heights. We have encountered some trials and tribulations along the way...soldiered on and come out the stronger for them. We have experienced exceptional moments, magical moments and created memories that will be fondly remembered in the years ahead.
Henry Ford wisely said, 'Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress and working together is success.' As we look back over the last few years, certainly there was a beginning, and thankfully there was also progress and yes - undeniably we have been successful!
But let's begin where all good stories begin - at the beginning!
I can’t forget when we all came together for the first time two years ago - apprehensive students all assembled in 5116, all wondering what the New Principal would be like and what the year would bring. What a commencement ceremony it was, signaling what would be the start of wonderful things to come. Yes, we all came together with a common purpose in mind - to encourage and develop lifelong learning in the young Ladies and Gentlemen who sit before us this evening.
And Yes it was probably the first time you heard the term “ there is no free lunch”
Steadfast, resolute and determined we all kept together. Day-by-day we focused on our goal, keeping together and working together. We faced some incredible and memorable moments – moments that we chose to use as stepping stone as we tenaciously pursued our common goals. And what progress we made, as just a few of the following highlights attest to:
Halloween Party, Christmas Party, Dancing with the Teachers, Film Night, Drama Festival, Live Theatre, University Challenge, Sporting Events in Football Basketball, Space Settlement Project, As Ice iPhone app to name but a few.
And yes like any family we argued, we fought, we discussed but we respected each other. And I would like to feel that you are leaving us having felt that as a staff we were approachable and there to help.
The end result Ladies and Gentlemen of our coming together, keeping together and working together, in spite of the obstacles that we may have faced along the way... that end result is the Graduating Class of 2014 My, how proud we are of the success that they have made with the opportunities that they were offered.
Congratulations, we are very proud of you all!
You are ready, willing and more than able to grasp the torch that we bestow upon you- yours is the future and on you the world will come to depend.
May your years ahead continue to be characterized by empathy, compassion, objectivity and a willingness to take risks.
May you always lead by example and work hard and play straight.
May your successes be many and your tribulations are few and far between.
Finally to quote Steve Jobs,
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
I wish you everything that you so richly deserve in the years ahead - it has been an honor and a privilege watching your progress and success! Please stay in touch and treasure the experiences and life opportunities that you have had at HFLS.
It’s been a very special two years.
Thank you!

Dear distinguished guests, my fellow teachers, parents and dear children,
I am so happy to be standing here to share this special moment with you.
Congratulations to all our students on your tremendous achievements.
You have made your parents, your teachers and the school so proud.
Finally, after three years of hard work, you have made it!
Do you know what that means?
It means no more Sunshine Running, or迟出寝室, or being lectured by He sir.
And I know just how much you’re going to miss it.
Joking aside, throughout your high school you have worked very hard to achieve your goals.
Consider where you were just a few years ago and you’ll see how much you have learned and how much you have matured.
Each of you has conquered mathematics, language, physics, economics and many other subjects.
The teachers here set a high standard and you have met that.
I know how hard you have worked.
Those long nights spent studying, rewriting your personal statement over and over again, jetting off to Hong Kong for your SAT tests…
By now you will know that the hard work has paid off and you are now a highly educated group who have shown they can meet their challenges.
Not only have you worked hard at school but many of you have volunteered to help others and also help the local community.
Some of you have volunteered to teach in Yunnan. Some of you have volunteered to help at the museum, hospital and orphanage.
That makes you well rounded people who can be leaders in the future.
That’s why when I look at you, I see great potentials and a thousand possibilities.
The excellent education you have had so far has set you up for a brilliant future.
I hope you continue to learn and give your best in college.
I must say that it has been an extraordinary experience working with you for the past three years. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
To me, it’s such a privilege to be involved in the process of your growth.
Leaving high school,I hope you live your life as an honest and compassionate person. I hope you follow your heart and stay true to yourself. Above all, I hope you maintain your service attitude and contribute in some way.
You will always be remembered and missed.
Thank you!

Good morning, I am very honoured to be asked to speak on the day of your graduation. Thank you for that honour.
I would like to begin by congratulating you all. You have made it! Graduating from high school is an amazing moment for anyone. If you look around you at your teachers; we have all been in your shoes; looking toward the future, feeling anxious about going to a new place, excited to learn new things and to make new friends. This is a moment you will remember for the rest of your life. Try to find some time today to take a step back and soak it all in. There aren’t many days that are all about celebrating you and only you – but today is one and I feel very privileged to be here celebrating with you.
Since beginning at HFLS, I have been witness to you moving from nervous year 1 students, into year 2 and have seen you blossom into mature, accomplished, determined individuals as you have completed your third year here. Congratulations.
As many of you are aware, I don’t know much about Science... but I believed Oscar Wilde when he said ‘Success is a science; if you have the conditions, you get the result.’
‘Result’ is an ambiguous term here. On the surface it could mean grades, GPAs, percentages but if you dig a little deeper it can mean much more; a well rounded education, lots of friends, rich fulfilled lives, social and academic balance, leadership, responsibilities, experience… the list goes on. Perhaps in past, the definition of your ‘results’ have been determined by parents, peers, teachers, high school, university conditions. These influences will always exist but when you go to university next semester, it will be up to you to decide what ‘result’ means because it will be up to you to create the conditions necessary for success. You can be anything, do anything, and achieve everything. Go and get it!
As I did last year, I am going to ask you to look around the room now. Look at the people celebrating your achievement. Professor Fang, our Centre Director Mr Xia, and, of course, our Centre Principal, Mr Cooper are sat here hoping you will blossom into mature students and continue to be good ambassadors for the school as so many have before.
I am sure parents sat among us are highly emotional – full of pride, joy, sadness, excitement – they want you to be independent and strong, academic and popular, hard- working and fulfilled, I imagine they want everything that you want for yourselves and more. Today means an awful lot to them too.
It has been an emotional week for tutors too. They have been with you since day one probably dreading the day they had to say goodbye.
You are also surrounded by your subject teachers. Your teachers are sat proudly; hoping for excellent grades in August and even better futures for you. I can see students I taught AS Literature to last year and my amazing A2 Literature students. You have given me the opportunity to challenge the status quo and to break new ground in China. It simply wouldn’t have been possible without your cooperation, your resilience and above all your passion for the subject. Thank you
There isn’t an adult in this room that is not looking at you with pride, delight, nostalgia. Most of all, we are looking at you with hope. We hope you make the most of your time after graduation.
I am going to finish with a speech from a Shakespearean play; I think it is appropriate today as it covers time, growth and encourages us all to make the most of our lives:
‘All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything’
On behalf of all of the staff at the CAL centre and from the bottom of my heart – good luck to all of you.
Thank you.

Distinguished guests, dear parents, teacher, my fellow students,
Good morning! Today, we gather here, dressing neatly. Today, like every assembly, we are here, discussing things. But today, we don’t have our center principle to deliver interesting stories, and share with us profound life philosophy; today, we don’t have any more plans for next week; because today is our last day in this school.
Before my speech starts, I would first like to give our thanks to parents and teachers sitting here. Thank you parents, thank you for your continuous understanding and support. Thank you teachers, thank you for your tireless teaching and mentoring. We will always remember that the success of each one of us belongs not only to ourselves, but also to these who give us selfless help in our lives. Let’s give our biggest applause to them!
In my mind, the most significant meaning of high school graduation is that this group of homogenous high school students is going to become elites in a variety of fields. It’s like a small tree, growing from a single trunk to branches and leaves covering the entire sky. When I stand here, I am thinking that maybe several years later, if we have the chance to gather here again, what a scene it will be! Our entrepreneurs will wear suits and ties, doctors with masks and white coats, coders with T-shirts and slippers, artist, I don’t know.
My grandpa once told me, that he thought our students are among the top 1% of human population. I don’t want to comment on this idea, because it’s too amusing. Only we know that we are not superior to student elsewhere. Every morning we get up two minutes before it’s too late; we study course material 2 days prior to the exam; and we submit our application essay exactly at deadline. However, we are still different from others. We are confident, independent and persistent. We are confident so that we are not afraid of exhibit our true selves, and we appreciate diversity among us. We are independent so that we value mistakes as gifts to us, and we respect others’ mistakes as well. We are persistent so that we are never daunted by setbacks, and we always assist others to achieve their goals.
At this moment before we are apart, I feel fortunate and content, because I befriended so many fantastic people in this school. In these three years, we’ve done extraordinary things together, and it’s more exciting to think that we are the owner of our own lives after graduation. In the following years, no matter where we are, what we are doing, lonely or busy, happy or gloomy, please remember that we are definitely different. We are definitely a group of people who are going to create history.
Parents, teachers, students, I believe everyone sitting here loves stories, and we’ll not let you down. Please look around, remember everyone’s face. We are waiting 10 years, 20 years, 30 years later, under every unchanged faces, a splendid life.
Thank you!
